Three railways, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, and the Kalka–Shimla Railway, are already in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site under the name Mountain Railways of India. The fourth railway, the Matheran Hill Railway, is on the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

5.  Matheran Hill Railway

Passing through the Western Ghats, the Matheran Hill Railway is a 2 ft narrow-gauge heritage railway in Maharashtra. Neral Matheran Toy Train connects Neral town to Matheran hill station in the Western Ghats near Karjat. This narrow gauge line is known for sharpest curves when compared to any Indian hill railway line. The view during the journey is indeed breathtaking, and the 21 km ride is covered in two hours. Opened to traffic in March 1907 Matheran Hill Railway makes your journey from Neral to Matheran an incredible experience.

4. The Kangra Valley Railway

Opened to traffic on April 1, 1929 this sensuous hill section of the North connects Pathankot(Punjab) to Joginder Nagar(Himachal Pradesh). This mountain railway line covers 164 km on a narrow gauge in 9 hours and 20. It is second mountain railway of Himachal Pradesh after Kalka Shimla Mountain Railway. The route has 971 uniquely designed bridges and two tunnels and it is known for its natural beauty and scenic view. Kangra Valley Railway pass through the misty Himalayas region with beautiful natural scenes during journey. The highest point on the route is Ahju station at an elevation of 1291 m, and the terminus at Joginder Nagar is at an elevation of 1189 m .

3. Kalka-Shimla Himalayan Railway

The Kalka Shimla Railway line is one of the most popular and beautiful mountain railways with tag of World Heritage Site of Mountain railways of India. This mountain railway line was completed on Nov. 9, 1903. The 103 tunnels and about 800 bridges on this route makes it a beautiful masterpiece of engineering. The six-hour-long, 96 km journey on narrow gauge with picturesque view of great Himalyan  Sivalik range region makes its one of the most beautiful mountain rail of the world. This railway route connects Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) to Kalka(Haryana) and famous for its scenery, Himalayan range,tunnel and views of foothills of the Himalayas.

2. Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

Inaugurated in 1881 and being a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, Darjeeling Himalayan Railway or Toy Train operated by the Indian Railways in West Bengal and listed as the Mountain Railways of India World Heritage Site. This Himalyan Railway covers a distance of 88 km in West Bengal from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling in seven-and-a-half hours. In this route there is a station named Ghum station, India’s highest railway station at an altitude of 2,257 m. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is an outstanding example of engineering skills of the highest order. This mountain railway route has 8 major bridges, 542 minor bridges and 177 unmanned level crossings.

1. Ooty Nilgiri Mountain Railway

The lazy train from Mettupalayam to Ooty passing through lush tea garden, mist clad mountains and astounding flora and fauna.Neelgiri Mountain Rail recognized as the World Heritage Site. It is metre gauge railway built by the British in 1908.  The coach of train is blue and cream wooden carriages with large windows and use steam locomotives. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is 46 kilometers long. It passes through many tunnels, and over hundreds of bridges (In whch 30 of them are large ones). The railway is best for photography because of the surrounding rocky terrain, ravines, tea plantations, and thickly forested hills. Coonoor, with its world famous tea garden is also tourist destination . The best views are situated along the stretch from Mettupalayam to Coonoor.
