After the success of Delhi Metro (DMRC), lots of Indian cities are exploring the option of operating metro rail project across the country. India is a developing country with total population over 130 crore, to handle these population we need mega infrastructures. And metro rail project is one of the key upcoming mega projects in India to move the cities with huge population. As per Ministry of Urban Development, about 316 kilometres of Metro rail is under operation and more than 500 kms of Metro rail is under construction in the country. This includes metro/mono rail systems promoted by state governments and private bodies under their own arrangements. Currently, 10 Indian cities have functional metro rail networks. These cities are Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Gurgaon, Mumbai, Kochi and Lucknow. The first metro service was started in Kolkata in 1984. Today we will talk about 12 Upcoming Metro Rail Projects in India. We have made the list according to length of upcoming metro project and Coimbatore Metro is in lead. Let see the complete list

1. Coimbatore Metro (136 Km)

Coimbatore Metro, which is also known as Kovai Metro, with 5 lines is a mass rapid transit system (MRTS) proposed to be built in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu by the Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL).Coimbatore upcoming metro rail projects will be implemented in four corridors covering a total network length of 136 km. These four proposed metro corridors are (1) From Karanampettai on Trichy Road to Thaneerpandal on Thadagam Road (42 km), (2) From Kaniyur to Ukkadam via Avinashi Road (26 km, (3) From Bilichi to Ukkadam via Mettupalayam Road (24 km), (4) From Ganeshapuram to Karunya Nagar via Sathy Road (44 km).

2.  Delhi-Meerut RRTS Corridor (82 Km)

The estimated 82 km long Delhi-Meerut RRTS Corridor would be passing through one of the most densely populated sections of the National Capital Region connecting Delhi to Uttar Pradesh. The corridor would be beneficial for the development of the region and help connect the large number of townships and centres of economic activity that are already planned along this corridor. 68.03 km of the line will be elevated, 14.12 km underground and 1.45 km will be at grade for connections to two depots that will come up at Duhai, Ghaziabad and Modipuram, Meerut. In dense area of Delhi and Meerut, the line will be underground.

3. Visakhapatnam Metro Rail (80 Km)

The Light Metro Rail system will be of a total length of 79.91 km consisting of 5 corridors. (i) Kommadi to Steel Plant Jn. on NH-16 (34.23 km) (ii) Gurudwara to Old Post Office (5.26 km) (iii) Thatichetlapalem to Chinavalteru (RK Beach) (6.91 km) (iv) Law college Jn. to Marikivalasa (8.21 km) (v) Kommadi to Bhogapuram Airport (25.3 km). All stations would be equipped with escalators and lifts for passenger movement, CCTV Cameras, X-ray machine for baggage scanning, human scanners, fire safety system, station signage, public display and announcement system.

4. Guwahati Metro Rail (61.4 Km)

Guwahati Mass Rapid Transit System project has been enlisted by the Govt. of India as planning stage project. M/s RITES Ltd. completed Feasibility Report and the DPR (Phase-I) for the Rail based MRTS for Guwahati in January, 2016. The DPR (Ph-I) prepared for total length of 61.4 Km has four corridors. The Phase-I have 4 corridors proposed Corridor-1: Dharapur– Narangi (Elevated), Corridor-2: M. G. Road to Khanapara (Underground), Corridor-3:Jalukbari to Khanapara (Elevated), Corridor-4: ISBT to Paltanbazar (Elevated)

5. Surat Metro (40.3 Km)

Metro Rail corridor for Surat is one of the prominent metro rail projects in the state of Gujarat. The 1st phase of metro comprises of two corridors: North-South corridor and East-West corridor. The proposed phase 1 includes in total of 38 stations in a stretch of total 40.35 Km in which 6.47 Km will underground . First corridor from Sarthana to Dream City line will be 21.61 km long in which 6.47 km would be underground and the rest elevated with 20 metro stations. Second corridor will be Bhesan to Saroli metro corridor, with a proposed length of 18.74 kms, it will be completely elevated with 18 stations.

6. Kanpur Metro Rail (32.5 Km)

Kanpur Metro is a rail-based mass transit system which is under construction for the city of Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Kanpur Metro Rail will have two corridors. In first corridor IIT-Kanpur to Naubasta corridor will include an elevated section of 15.16km and an underground stretch of 8.62km. The second 8.5km-long second corridor from Agriculture University to Barra-8 will include 4.19km of elevated stretch and 4.41km of underground section. The first corridor will have 22 stations, comprising 14 elevated and eight underground stations and second corridor will pass through eight stations, including Kakadeo, Vijay Nagar Chauraha, Shastri Chowk, and Govind Nagar.

7. Indore Metro Rail (31.5 Km)

The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the implementation of  Indore upcoming metro rail projects in Ring Line of length 31.55 Km from Bengali Square – Vijay Nagar – Bhawarsala – Airport – Patasia – Bengali Square. This ring will connect major public nodes and city cluster areas of Indore. The metro corridors will have Multimodal Integration with Railway Station & BRTS Stations and feeder network of Bus, Intermediate Public Transport (IPT) and Non Motorised Transport (NMT).  Indore Metro Rail project will cost around 12000 crore (US$1.8 billion).

8. Patna Metro (31.3 Km)

Patna Metro Rail Project is a rapid transit system for the capital city of Patna in Bihar and it would be owned and operated by state-run Patna Metro Rail Corporation (PMRC). Patna Metro is estimated to cost Rs 13411.77 crore. The Centre would spend 20% of the cost as Viability Gap Fund while the state government would spend a similar amount depending upon the final estimate of the project. The first phase will connect Danapur to Mithapur Bus stand and the North-South corridor will connect Patna Railway Station to the proposed ISBT.

9. Agra Metro (29.4 Km)

Agra Metro has been divided into 2 Corridor which would pass through the heart of the city, connecting tourist spots like the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Sikandra. Corridor 1 (14 km) would run from Sikandra to Taj East Gate and Corridor 2 (15.4 km) would extend from Agra Cantt to Kalindi Vihar. Corridor 1 would have 6 elevated and 7 underground stations. Corridor 2 would be completely elevated, having 14 stations” said Kumar Keshav, MD of the Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation, which is implementing Agra Metro Project.

10. Varanasi Metro (29.2 Km)

Varanasi Light Metro is an urban Light Rail Transit (LRT) system in which 2 lines & 26 stations proposed to be built in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (UPMRCL). According to the proposal Varanasi metro will operate from BHEL to BHU in Tarna with 16 stations. And the route of the ropeway will be from the main Godoulia intersection of the city to Rath Yatra, beyond the Varanasi railway station to Khidkia Ghat

11. Bhopal Metro Rail (28 Km)

Bhopal Metro rail project is a mass rapid transit system (MRTS) being developed in the capital city Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Estimated cost of the project is Rs 69.41bn . Bhopal Metro is planned to offer affordable and reliable transportation in Bhopal while reducing pollution and travel time. Bhopal Metro rail project will include six lines in a phased development. The phase one will involve two corridors first (15 km) and second (12.88) with a combined length of 27.87km. Plan for firsh phase is approved.

12. Thiruvananthapuram Metro (21.8 Km)

With the help of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), Kerala is going to start metro service in 2 city Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode. Thiruvananthapuram Metro (Capital Metro) is a proposed rapid transit system in the city of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of the Indian state of Kerala. The metro line will start from Technocity and terminate at Karamana covering a distance of 22.537 km with 19 stations, along the old NH 47. The project will be built in 3 phases.
