8. Mahaparinirvan Express

The Mahaparinirvan Express is a tourist train which was launched by the Indian Railway on 28 March 2007, to attract Buddhist pilgrims from all over the world. The train takes passengers on an eight-day, seven-night spiritual tour through Buddhist sites across North India, where Buddhism originated more than 2,500 years ago. It came into existence by modifying the carriages of an Air-Conditioned Rajdhani Express sleeper train.

Train offers three different classes of travel i.e first class, two-tier and three-tier. Drinking water, coffee, and tea are available in short intervals which is free of cost with a world-class kitchen to sate your hunger pangs with sumptuous food.

Train Features

The Mahaparinirvan Express is operated by Indian Railways using carriages from a Rajdhani Express. This train has a dedicated dining carriage, hygienic kitchen that prepares meals for passenger, and bathroom cubicles with showers. The train is comfortable and passengers are greeted with garlands, provided with luggage assistance, and given a welcome gift of a Buddhist guidebook. Security guards are present on the train, and tours are fully guided by the Indian Railway.

7. Fairy Queen Express

The Fairy Queen, is the oldest working Steam Locomotive in the world, built in 1855 which is also Certified as the world’s oldest working locomotive by the Guinness Book of World Records. The Indian Railway again started the journey of this heritage train in July 1997 that started from Delhi and goes on till Alwar. The good thing about the train is that travellers can still board the heritage locomotive aboard the journey from Delhi to Alwar under a two day journey.

It takes few stopovers to refill the water within the steam locomotive. In six hours, passengers reach Alwar in Rajasthan, which is prominent in tourism for Sariska National Park. Here passengers stay at the Tiger Den hotel. Sariska National Park is spread over 881-square-kilometre, which is home to not only tigers, but other wildlife species like wild boar, chital, sambar, nilgai, jackals, mongooses, peacocks, porcupines, and numerous birds

The Steam Express has a 60-seater air-conditioned chair car designed with a large glass window from where passengers can have a frontal view of the Locomotive, besides there is a well maintained pantry car for on board catering. The Palace on Wheels is another most popular luxury tourist train launched by the Indian Railways in association with Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation to promote tourism in Rajasthan.

The train service was refurbished and relaunched in August 2009 with a new decor, itinerary, cuisine and facility. The train starts from Safdarjung Railway Station, New Delhi on a week-long run through Rajasthan every Wednesday night. The trip includes a visit to Agra and the Taj Mahal. The train moves by night and each morning you will get up at a new destination where novel experiences await you.

A total of 14 coaches with luxurious cabins, exquisite wallpapers, well-stocked bar, gracious hospitality and local culture displayed by artistic use of paintings and handicrafts can accommodate upto 88 guests. There are 14 saloons in total, each equipped with four twin-bedded chambers with attached baths with hot and cold water and showers.
